The hideaway town of Poona is located on the mainland, opposite Fraser Island, and is popular with holiday-makers who enjoy the quiet life, quiet water and good fishing. The area of water separating the mainland from Fraser Island is called the “The Great Sandy Straits“, a sheltered waterway still very much the way nature designed it.
It is a marine wonderland – fish, dugong, turtles, dolphins, mangroves, seagrass pastures and birdlife. Many fish species are in abundance, along with sand and mud crabs. Excellent fishing is available either from the shore or out in the dinghy, where mangrove-lined creeks can be explored or you can try your luck in the deep holes along Fraser Island. Yabbies can be pumped on the low tide flats.
To relax and unwind, Poona offers peace and quiet which is sometimes hard to find these days. Enjoy nature by taking long walks, watching the birdlife and discovering the wildflowers. A perfect break from the hustle and bustle of city life.
For those who want a day at the shops, Maryborough is only a half-hour drive away. Access to Poona is via the Cooloola Coast Road, from either Maryborough or Gympie. Poona, right on the beachfront, with views towards the southern part of Fraser Island, is a delightful hideaway spot for a holiday. It’s an easy drive from the city, yet seems to be in another world.
At Poona Palms Caravan Park, Pauline and Don Wallace have a warm welcome for folks who want to get away from it all. Some people drop in for a night and stay a week, and in the winter, visitors come for extended stays.
Poona Palms Caravan Park has caravan and tent sites and on-site vans. There are also two and three bedroom first floor units which have premier views of the Sandy Strait and Fraser Island, only 9 km away.
Newly completed one bedroom resort-style units are also available and sleep up to five people. These tastefully decorated units feature a large bathroom, cooking facilities, spacious layout and patio. Linen is supplied. Everything you need for a nightly or extended holiday.
